UIUC - Where I Belong

I BELONG

Finally, I managed to finish this one. Yeah! Alhamdulillah...
[Ini bukan post untuk promosi.. :]

I belong?
What’s that?

Simply, it is the university where I belong. The place where I will be sparing my precious 4 years time studying and of course having fun (hope so)! The community that I will be mingling with - a serene community in which I belong to…
Why 'I belong'?
It is one of their trademarks. Even the first offer letter that I received had ‘I Belong’ at the back of the envelope…cool huh?
It looks something like this >>>

UIUC? [ If you want to look at the rankings scroll down ]
Because the name of this public University is quite long, there are quite a few names that you can use to refer to this University…

This is the official name:
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)

*Note that Urbana and Champaign are the names of town and city in which UIUC is situated and Illinois is the state.

Another name:
University of Illinois

*There are two other Universities which share the name University of Illinois. Therefore, calling the name University of Illinois might raise some confusion if you want to refer to only one specific University.
The duos are:
University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)
University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS)

The famous name amongst the community:
U of I

This is a quite common, easy to utter and a simple ‘nick’ name for the University. The U of I community really prefer it and use this name more frequent.

Why choose UIUC?
They have good rankings in Engineering and Business, both for undergraduate and postgraduate.

Rankings? Are you sure?
(Beneficial for those are planning on which Universities to apply - UIUC is good choice!)

Let me prove it to you.

Then??Hmm... need not to wait. Let's buckle up and embark on the journey of the US Education. FREE ADMISSION !!!

Name of the Event: U.S.A For Students

Date, Day, Time: June 14 2008, Saturday, 10:00AM - 4:00PM

Venue: Dewan San Choon - Wisma MCA 163 Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur

LET's look at some FAQs.

What is U.S.A. For Students?

U.S.A. For Students is an education fair organized by alumni and current students of universities and colleges in America. We are doing this for two reasons: (a) to share with you our experience of education in America beyond what is provided in admission brochures and booklets and (b) to prepare incoming students for their initial experience in America.

Who is invited?

Basically, anyone who is interested in studying in the United States or just want to know more about education there. We have first-hand information because we’ve been through the nervousness about moving to a foreign country, the panic of studying with the mat-sallehs and even the pain of leaving our moms and dads and the precious roti canai and nasi lemak. Everyone is welcome! The more the merrier!

How do I be a part of this event?

Simply come! June 14, 2008 at Dewan San Choon - Wisma MCA. A special treat would be given to attendees who register online!

How to reach there??

Alternative 1 (Recommended ):-
Take Kelana Jaya Line LRT (formerly known as Putra LRT) and exit at Ampang Park LRT Station (one stop after KLCC from the direction of KL Sentral). Once exit, turn left and go up the escalator. Walk past Nikko Hotel and Menara Citibank. Wisma MCA is the building after Menara Citibank. It is approximately a 3-minute walk.

Alternative 2:-
Take Kelana Jaya Line LRT (formerly known as Putra LRT) and exit at KLCC Station. Walk along Jalan Ampang towards the direction of Nikko Hotel. Walk past Pelita Nasi Kandar and a temple and you will reach Wisma MCA. Wisma MCA is opposite Corus Hotel. It is aprroximately a 7-minute walk.

Do I have to pay an entrance fee?

No! This event is FREE! We are doing this pro-bono, meaning free-of-charge.

How to I get more information about this event?

Simply go the website - http://www.usaforstudents.org/

or you might want to have a look at last year's event.

What should I prepare?

There are several things that can be prepared. But they are all optional.... (Bring your body and be present, that is the most important thing:)

1. Questions. You might wanna jot down and think about some appropriate questions to ask the current students, alumni, speakers, etc.

2. List of Universities. It is recommended that you make a list of universities that you are planning to apply. So that you know which universities are in your highest priority because there will be around 50 universities participating.

About the list

I suggest that you divide your list into two - dream/best schools (US people like to use the term 'schools' for universities), and also back-up or back door schools. You should be aware that some universities are really highly selective that they admit only a few of international students every year. Like MIT, this year, they only admitted one out of 80 Malaysian applicants who applied.

And i recommend that you make your list according to specific ranking rather than general ranking and surely if you are scholars of any sponsors, make sure that you check with your sponsors whether you are allowed or not to pursue your studies at the desired universities. (you can check with your sponsors once you have enrolled in the pre-U prog or check with your seniors at your pre-U prog, and usually the top universities will definitely be endorsed by your sponsors)

Here are rankings that you can look at online...

1. The Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings

Type: general world rankings, world rankings according to field (technology, natural sciences, etc)

download the full-color, PDF format, 2007 edition here.

2. US News & World Report

main website (rankings)

national universities : top schools

best graduate schools (PhD and Masters)

best undergraduate engineering (choose second box - school whose highest degree is a doctorate)

best undergraduate business (includes accounting, finance, etc)

* for undergraduate rankings, the rankings are limited, i have a copy of several parts of the book of the America's Best Colleges 2008 which offer more rankings. Therefore, if you want more info, please email me at friendfries89@gmail.com

and Many more rankings!!!...

there are few more links at the wikipedia website here and you can also read more information about university rankings there.

3. Requirements. Once you have the list of the universities that you want to go. Go check on their websites first. Look at requirements such as essay(s) (this is one of the crucial elements), SAT scores (whether you have to just take SAT 1 , or you need to take SAT 1 & 2 or you don't require to take both), TOEFL scores and etc.

4. Know about US admission exams. If you have not heard about SAT or TOEFL or know less about them. Quickly check on their websites. You can even try some sample questions. For SAT 1, you can subscribe for daily questions via email.

Simply go to http://www.collegeboard.org/ for SAT 1 and SAT 2 (SAT Subjects)

and www.ets.org/toefl for TOEFL

5. Just google what ever you want to know about US Education system or things pertaining to it. At least, you have a picture of it and it will be easier for you to come out with questions. The internet is a powerful tool, use IT!

Here are some useful websites that you can have a look regarding US Education.

Am I (ammar faris) attending the US Fair???

Good question. I will say, 'yes', of course. Haha.. Meet you there.. Most probably, I will be at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign booth (near to Harvard University and Stanford University booth >> look at the floor map). I am also planning to sell some materials and books which will prepare you for SAT 1, SAT 2 and TOEFL and gear you towards EXCELLENT SCORES !!! Anyone interested, do email me.

You can also ask any question related to this topic.

Email me at friendfries89@gmail.com or just post your comment at this post. Thank you.

And if it does not burden you, do notify me (by email) together with some infos (such as prep place, name, previous school, course) if you kind of 'confirm' to attend this event, so that we can meet and discuss things at WISMA MCA..

Even though it will be held in WISMA 'MCA', it has nothing to do with politics, kay... :)

So, tunggu ape lagi. MARI JOIN!!!

PPOU ~ Where everyone can fly!!!

PART I)
Assalamualaikum semua,

/* For PPOU students yg x nak baca pengenalan/penerangan about PPOU nih boleh procede to PART II (belum siap)*/

“Don’t procrastinate!!!” my English lecturer had once told me this. Hmm… memang tidak elok bertangguh (tanpa sebab yg munasabah).

Mohon ribuan kemaafan sebab menangguh post pasal PPOU nih.

“Nak start dengan ape yer???” – soklan ni lah yg mula2 terpacul keluar dari kotak fikiranku…

Okay, macam ni lah, DEFINITION dulu… a lot of books have this kind of preamble….(buku calculus pun kebanyakkan start dengan what the heck is dy/dx or f ’(x) )..so kire nak tiru style la nih :)

PROGRAM

Pe kebenda PPOU nih???It is singkatan bagi Preparatory Program for Overseas Universities. Actually, waktu mula2 masuk UNITEN dulu… blur gak… ader la tengok laman web UNITEN tu…tercari2 program persediaan yg dorang offer, tapi still samar2, sekejap2 dier tulis program ATU, then tiba2 PPOU….

Hmm…mane satu nih??

So, setelah lama sedikit berada di UNITEN yg serba lengkap dengan facilities sebagaimana Universiti2 laen, barulah ku tahu pe lah bentuk program yg dorang sebenarnyer offer.

Untuk pengetahuan korang kat UNITEN ader 4 departments
3 di campus Putrajaya kat Bangi and 1 di campus Muadzam Shah kat Pahang.

Department2 adalah seperti berikut :

1.College of Engineering (COE) – bangi
2.College of Information Technology (COIT) – bangi
3.Institute of Liberal Studies (IKAL) – bangi
4.College of Business Management and Accounting (COBA)– pahang

IKAL sebenarnyer banyak offer subject2 general studies yg merangkumi sukan (cth: golf, kayak), language (cth: bhs German, English), social science and humanities, teaching and learning, tuk student2 UNITEN.

Dah nama dier pun Istitut Kajian Liberal… so byk la subjek2 ‘liberal’ yg di ‘offer’.

So nak dibuat cerita, IKAL nih pun offer program2 persediaanso tuk memudahkan korang….

1. PPOU (Preparatory Program for Overseas Universities)

FAKTA MENARIK!

Lahirlah program bernama PPC (Program Pelajar Cemerlang).

Macam mane pulak dengan SPC?
Hmm... SPC (Skim Pelajar Cemerlang) membuat program yg sama dengan PPC, cuma ‘timing’ je berlainan.

Pada bulan Jan 2008, MARA memilih students MRSM lepasan SPM 2007 berdasarkan result TRIAL SPM 2007 dorang dan meng‘enrol’kan mereka dalam program under IKAL..Maka, terbentuklah program bernama SPC.
Tempoh belajar bagi SPC/PPC - 1 thn Foundation di UNITEN
- 3/4 thn Degree di UNITEN
3. PIJB
Pe lah pulak program nih???
Saya saje je letak nama pendek yg saya reka sendiri.

klik>> http://www.uniten.edu.my/newhome/content_list.asp?contentid=637

ANTARA KELEBIHAN MEMBUAT PROGRAM PERSEDIAAN DI UNITEN

1.PPOU memegang record 100% berjaya fly. So x perlu lah risau sgt.

2. Lecturer2 yang mantap2 dan sememangnya friendly and amicable. Kebanyakkan lecturer adalah graduan2 from overseas Universities dan ada yang from top international universites macam Cambridge University, UK dan University of Wisconsin, US.

SPM oh SPM...(SPaM ker???)

SPM or SPaM???

Totally, it is not related to SPAM or any TROJANs...
Come on, it's SPM...not SPaM..
Yeah, SPM...u know...

the dreadful exam that the form 5 students fear the most...
The exam that seems to be the 'omen or indication' of the students future, whether it is a good omen or a bad omen...bright or dark future..

and friends...the result for the SPM 2006 candidates had been released on the 12th of March....and believe it or not...

it is not that scary after all...

Why?? because Hishamuddin said so..he said that there was an increased of the percentage of the students who passed the SPM exam..and there was a proliferation (saje nak tunjukkan peningkatan) and hike in the amount of students who got straight A1 and straight A's...AMAZING!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

and how bout this....a new record has been set by a SMKA Yan student....21A's???
can you believe that?? this surely has never been contemplated by any students during the early 90's...but now it has become a reality...so, don't be flabbergasted if suddenly in the future..students can score 30A's or perhaps 40A's???

Are the students becoming smarter????or the syllilbus are becoming easier??or if not so,maybe the marking schemes are becoming less strict???do you think that the government should put some limits to the subjects that a form 5 student can take???

FOR WHAT PURPOSE???

Hmm...sometimes...i wonder..for what purpose amek byk2 subjek nih??nak set record???hmm yer lah nak uji diri, kata Azali yg juga tokoh nilam kebangsaan...but then kalu amek physics, bio and chem..pastuh amek science ..bukan x menguji diri ker??

tapi ader gak pros dier kan..boleh buktikan kemampuan diri...bley tunjuk yg kiter flexible...boleh latih time management...yer lah nak manage 21 subjects..bukan senang kan...

but then...biler amek byk2 subject pun...nnti kiter akan focus satu major kan...atau pun dua..kalu buat double major..but then, biler apply scholarship, kiter apply tuk satu course jer kan....then, sure pening nak pikir course mane nak amek..kalu kiter mmg hebat dlm bio, physics, chem, account, arts and etc...

nway, congratz Azali...ko buktikan yg Melayu boleh!!!

RESULT KISAS...

skang psl result KISAS lak..
aku amek dari blog paan..so, paan sorry la..cilok sket data ko...hehehe..but some mmg aku tau

TAHNIAH KORANG..memang bangga dengan prestasi korang!!!

YANG X BERJAYA DAPAT STRAIGHT A's

Rilex la..masa depan masih cerah...aku bukan straight A's pun...mula2 tuh sampai nangis gak la..malu tul nak bgtau bab nangis2 nih..but, peluang masih ader byk...and ader hikmah di atas aper yang berlaku...juz apply scholarship2 and gi interview dgn penuh confident...insyaALLAH bley dapat..

CORNELL: Inter-view & Inter-makan

Salamz...

Betul lah kata orang... "Penantian itu penuh penyiksaan"
hmm...

So, kat sini nak lah citer sket pasal interview yang dikendalikan oleh alumni2 Cornell University yg merupakan antara top university di US yg sgt terkenal dgn gelaran 'Ivy League'...

Thanks din paiman and laen2 sebab mengikuti perkembangan interview2 yg ku lalui...sorry la sebab agak lambat post pasal interview Cornell ni...mmg mencabar lah admission ke US nih..hik2

Kisah bermula...

Ku lihat2 jam di tangan... lah! x ingat la pulak, jam aku dah rosak..terpaksa lah keluarkan handset... pukul 3.30p.m

'awal lah pulak!!!'..aku punyer interview kul 4.20p.m...so aku pun gi lah ronda2 kat KLCC tuh...but actually misi first yg aku laksanakan ialah mencari spot yg telah dijanjikan untuk diadakan interview tersebut...kang takut ronda2 nnti x jumper lak tempat yang sepatutnyer aku gi...

STARBUCK level 3, KLCC....tidak terkejut tuk aku tgk ader seorang applicant sedang petah menjawab soklan yg dikemukakan oleh interviewees tuh...yg agak terkezut sikit ialah interviewee dier bukan sorang atau dua orang..tapi 1 + 1 + 1..bape ek???

Fortunately, biler aku di interview, ader dua orang jerh..ntah la sorang lagi pegi mane aku pun x tau..mungkin dah borink kot duk kat starbuck tuh lama2(yang interviewee pertama nama dier Mr. Chen Chow- aku de letak gambar dier kat bawah tuh kat post aku yg lepas, satu lagi Mr. Rais Imran - seorang bekas didikan Puan Fatimah under program ATU kat UNITEN nih)...

Kalu nak tgk gambar Rais yang segak bergaya nih...kat bawah ni saje2 jer la aku letak gambar dier...friendly orangnyer...rasanyer bekas pelajar SMAP...(rival KISAS nih!!! :) )

Dengar2 mmg ramai applicant yg di interview pada hari tuh..mcm interview marathon la pulak..

And mmg berbanding interview2 yang laen..yang nih paling rushing sekali...memang jelas dan ketara..sebab dier budget tuk sorang dlm 25-30 minit jerh, coz ramai applicant...so, memang nampak macam nak cepat lah..tapi ader benda yg bez pasal interview nih..nnti aku bgtau di akhir post nih..

setelah aku try to recall soklan2 dier.....

mmg ader yg menarik and mencabar la...aku amek yg bez2 jer tau...try la jawab...

1. if you can invite a speaker to Cornell, who will you invite?why?
(secara spontan...aku cakap Bill Gates, hmm x tau la pulak...aku hentam jer la..dah dier de kaitan dgn course aku and aku pernah wat assigment pasal dier)

owh dan lanjutan kepada nih...Mr Chen tuh ader promote sket bahawasanyer akan diadakan satu event called WCIT 2008 (World Congress on IT 2008) kat MAS pada bulan May nih...so, dier cakap la yg aku atau sape2 jer la boleh jadi volunteer tuh event tuh...dpt rm80 sehari!!! hehehe...top2 CEO cam Bill Gates and Michael Dell akan datang..aku mungkin join...dier ader interview..hehehe..interview lagi..huhuhu

tuk detail lanjut gi lah kat http://www.wcit2008.org/

gi kat ruang volunteers..tarikh tutup untuk apply jadi volunteer rasanyer akhir feb nih..jom pakat join ramai2...

2. I heard that Microsoft is planning to buy Yahoo!!! Google did not take this approach. What do you think about it? Is it a reasonable action? If you are the CEO, will you do so???why??

(terkezut tuk dua saat and lepas tuh aku bantai jer jawab , tapi relevan la...)

3. US will provide a hollistic education. Besides subjects pertaining to your major(Electrical and Computer Engineering), what subject would you like to take??
(aku ckp Psychology and i don't why...tiba2 spontaneous keluar dari kepala....jawab jer la...)

4. (yang nih cepu emas) - memang putar belit gak lak aku jawab soklan nih...rate you self within this 25 minutes of interview, what is your strength and weakness during this short interview??

hehehe... HA???*&^%$#...My jaw dropped...memang un'sangkarable'....hehehe...
aku kasi rate aku 7....sekali lagi, x tau la kenapa....

6 must-know details about Cornell University

2. Makanan free bersepah kat dalam campus - tapi kena check la 'halal' ker x

3. Pintu rumah and bilik x kunci sepanjang 4 tahun pun, x de barang hilang - pengalaman Mr. Chen Chow

4. De beberapa mesin pembuat aiskrim macam McD..and boleh makan aiskrim sebanyak2 nyer

5. Attendance wajib kat Cornell ialah 20% jerh..(ponteng x digalakkan)

6. Soklan exam selalunyer killer...(takutnyer...)..dier ckp kalu x pernah FAIL, kat Cornell lah masa yang sesuai untuk merasainya..dier pernah dpt 6/100 untuk subject nanotechnology - pengalaman Mr. Chen Chow..-scary huh????
